چکیده

Retrievals of ocean surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chla) by multiple ocean color satellite sensors (SeaWiFS, MODIS-Terra, MODIS-Aqua, MERIS, VIIRS) using standard algorithms were evaluated in the California Current using a large archive of in situ measurements. Over the full range of in situ Chla, all sensors produced a coefficient of determination (R) between 0.79 and 0.88 and a median absolute percent error (MdAPE) between 21% and 27%. However, at in situ Chla > 1 mg m, only products from MERIS (both the ESA produced algal_1 and NASA produced chlor_a) maintained reasonable accuracy (R from 0.74 to 0.52 and MdAPE from 23% to 31%, respectively), while the other sensors had R below 0.5 and MdAPE higher than 36%. We show that the low accuracy at medium and high Chla is caused by the poor retrieval of remote sensing reflectance.

Evaluation of Satellite Retrievals of Chlorophyll-a in the Arabian Gulf

The Arabian Gulf is a highly turbid, shallow sedimentary basin whose coastal areas have been classified as optically complex Case II waters (where ocean colour sensors have been proved to be unreliable). Yet, there is no such study assessing the performance and quality of satellite ocean-colour datasets in relation to ground truth data in the Gulf. Here, using a unique set of in situ Chlorophyl...

Assessing Uncertainties in Satellite Ocean Color Bio - Optical Properties

Uncertainties in retrievals of bio-optical properties from satellite ocean color imagery are related to a variety of factors, including errors associated with sensor calibration and degradation, atmospheric correction, and the bio-optical inversion algorithms. Here we examine the impact of uncertainties in the top-of-atmosphere (TOA) radiances and coefficients in the quasi-analytical algorithm ...

Estimating Errors in Satellite Retrievals of Bio-Optical Properties Due to Incorrect Aerosol Model Selection

We examine the impact of incorrect atmospheric correction, specifically incorrect aerosol model selection, on retrieval of bio-optical properties from satellite ocean color imagery. Uncertainties in retrievals of bio-optical properties (such as chlorophyll, absorption and backscattering coefficients) from satellite ocean color imagery are related to a variety of factors, including errors associ...

Validation of the VIIRS Ocean Color

The Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) launched the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite including the Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on October 28, 2011which has the capability to monitor ocean color properties. Four months after launch, we present an initial assessment of the VIIRS ocean color products including inter-comparisons with satellite and in s...

Trends in primary production in the California Current detected with satellite data

[1] Several ocean primary production algorithms using satellite data were evaluated on a large archive of net primary production (NPP) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) measurements collected by the California Cooperative Fisheries Investigations program in the California Current. The best algorithm matching in situ data was found by empirically adjusting the Behrenfeld-Falkowski Vertically Generalized...
